Digital Uplift: Empowering Kathmandu’s Micro-Entrepreneurs for the Digital Age

The Digital Uplift initiative actively bridges the digital divide for micro-entrepreneurs across Kathmandu. Initiated by Open Internet Nepal, the program features intensive training session led by experienced digital transformation expert Sagun Dhungana.

The project will be implemented in Kathmandu Metropolitan City, specifically targeting informal and semi-formal businesses operating in urban centers such as Maitidevi, Old Baneshwor, Chabahil, and Kapan. While these enterprises are vital to the local economy, they are frequently excluded from digital ecosystems. Consequently, this initiative was developed to provide the necessary intervention to close that gap.

The program brings together a dedicated group of 25–30 micro-entrepreneurs, including owners of Kirana Pasal (grocery stores), barbers, tailors, street vendors, and repair service providers. By focusing on these grassroots business owners, the initiative highlights the essential role of local commerce in driving economic resilience through technological adoption.

The project will be very useful and focused on the community. Among the main areas of concentration were:

  • Establishing a Digital Presence: We focused on moving businesses from being “digitally invisible” to having a meaningful online footprint. This helps them reach new customers and build long-term brand trust.
  • Digital Tools for Growth: Practical training on leveraging mobile-first technologies, digital payment systems, and productivity tools to streamline daily operations.
  • Adapting to Post-Pandemic Trends: Navigating the transition into a modern economy.
  • Community-Centered Support: Utilizing a needs-based approach that includes baseline assessments and tailored follow-up support to ensure sustainable technology adoption.

By conducting baseline assessments, delivering hands-on training, and providing tailored follow-up support, the project will also generate insights into the barriers and opportunities for digital adoption among urban micro-enterprises. These learnings can inform future scale-up efforts and policy interventions aimed at bridging Nepal’s digital divide.
